The Web edition of the Catholic Encyclopedia
Knight had searched the web for good Catholic sites. Unable to find any, he launched the New Advent website, taking the name from the period leading up to the millennium, a phrase was first coined by John Paul II in his encyclical Redemptor Hominis.

Knight took his Catholic Encyclopedia project to the world's Internet users and invited them to help by transcribing articles from the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia, and sending them to him via e-mail for publication on New Advent.

Since the on-line version of the Catholic Encyclopedia was completed on Christmas Day 1999, it has become one of the most requested Catholic resources on the web in English.

Knight chose the 1913-15 volume set not only because the later editions are still under copyright protection, but because it is also thought by many to be the superior version. Although 84 years old, readers find the Catholic Encyclopedia solid, surprisingly relevant, and eternally valuable.

New Advent's web site counter reveals that the Catholic Encyclopedia receives more than 30,000 visits per day, and more that 18,000 documents are downloaded each day. Clearly, the Catholic Encyclopedia is meeting a need.
